This event is intended to encourage informal discussion and exploration of classical mythologies in 18th-century representation. Taking the appropriation of antique mythology to refine 18th-century gender identities as its central focus, the day symposium includes discussion of historical, literary, archaeological, artistic and topographical representation.

Featured speakers include Anastasia Bakogianni, Institute of Classical Studies, University of London and James Moore, Institute of Historical Research, University of London.

Discursive areas addressed in symposium papers include:

Allegorical, narrative, and idealizing use of classical mythologies in visual culture

Modes of Representation; heroic decorative, pastoral, in bacchante and literary modes; dialogues, mock epic, masquerade.

Reception of Antique mythology in early 19th-century representation

Classical myth and representations of the Grand Tour
