7:30 p.m., Thursday, January 18, 2017 Ed 106.2 (Education Building), University of Regina Shane Book is an award-winning poet and film-maker. Educated at New York University, the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and Stanford University, he is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Writing at the University of Victoria. Book’s first poetry collection, Ceiling of Sticks (University of Nebraska Press, 2010), won the Prairie Schooner Book Prize and the Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award and was a Poetry Society of America ‘New American Poet’ Selection. His second, Congotronic, (University of Iowa Press / House of Anansi Press, 2014) was a Kuhl House Poets Selection, won the Archibald Lampman Award and was a finalist for the 2015 Griffin Poetry Prize. Book’s first film, Dust, received numerous awards and was screened at festivals and on television around the world. His second film, Praise and Blame, stars Costas Mandylor (the SAW movies, Sex and the City, Mobsters, The Doors) and will premiere in 2018. At this presentation, in addition to screening his films, Dust, Praise and Blame, as well as a short film, Killing It, shot in Minneapolis in 2017, Shane Book will read from his poetry collections and offer reflections on the similarities between film and poetry, the challenges of producing different types of films, and the experience of adapting a poem to the screen.
